The hyena is considered a solitary, cruel, and unsociable animal, but its reality is quite different, as they are animals that establish very sophisticated social habits. These animals, unlike most, live in family groups led by a female.

For many years, it was widely believed that hyenas were mere scavengers, waiting for lions to finish their meals before moving in on the remains. However, this idea is indeed totally wrong: although their magnificent jaw power and excellent gastric juices allow them to feed on bones and hide, the hyena is more skilled at hunting than the lion, with its hunting success being close to 30%, although it cannot always enjoy its prey since in 20% of cases, lions, its natural enemy, steal them, not hesitating to kill them if they have the opportunity to eliminate potential competitors.

Hyenas avoid confrontations with lions by hunting at night, being a species with nocturnal habits that seeks the shelter of rock hollows, caves, and trees in the very peculiar environment offered by Cabárceno Park.
