The Puff Adder is the most dangerous and well-known of the large African vipers, responsible for most of the fatal accidents that occur on this continent. This is due to its aggressive nature, wide distribution, prolificacy (high reproductive rate), and limited agility in avoiding encounters with humans.
Its strong and prolonged hiss (or “puff”) is a warning that we should not ignore, as it signals its presence and danger.
A quarter of what it inoculates in a single bite is enough to cause death in an adult human, characterized by severe diffuse hemorrhages in the tissues and internal cavities of the body, accompanied by local symptomatology.
