Ash

Deciduous tree, with gray or grayish-brown bark. It is the most robust and largest of the three native ash species.

Fraxinus was the name the Romans gave to ash trees and their wood; excelsior means “that which stands out” due to its greater stature.

Leaves The leaves are deciduous, opposite, and compound, formed by 7 to 13 leaflets, are odd-pinnate, have a uniformly serrated margin, and are hairless on both sides.
Flowers/Fruit The seed, which is elongated, has a wing that helps its dispersal by wind. This fruit is called a Samara.
Climate/Habitat Humid and cool mountain areas, indifferent to soil type, growing from sea level up to 1200 m.
