This tree belongs to the same family as Alders. Its scientific name in Latin, Betulla, comes from the name by which the Celts knew it: betu.
It serves as food for a large number of moths and butterflies.

Before paper was invented, its whitish second bark was used.
Its leaves and bark provide a very strong yellow or brown dye.
The bark, even when damp, is highly flammable.
