Buckthorn

Perennial shrub, branched and variable in appearance, smooth and grey trunk in young specimens; in adults it is very similar to that of the holm oak.

Its fruits are purgative; its bark has been used for dye manufacturing.

Height Up to 8 meters.
Leaves Coriaceous, persistent, simple, and alternate. They measure 8 to 6 mm wide, 8 to 50mm long, and are lanceolate, ovate, and veined in shape. Margins are toothed and serrated.
Flowers/Fruit The flowers appear in clusters between March and April, are fragrant, and have 4 petals. The fruit measures 5mm in diameter, is rounded, fleshy, and red, turning black upon ripening.
Climate/Habitat It dominates in humid and shady areas, and adapts well to almost any substrate.
