Liquidambar

Deciduous tree, with a medium to large trunk, up to 1 m in diameter, branched from the base with more or less spreading branches.

Curiosities

Mixed with tobacco, it was used for smoking at the court of the Mexican emperors. It was also widely used in France as a perfume for gloves.

Height Up to 30 m.
Leaves Palmate and lobed, 7 to 19 cm. Long and wide, closely resembling those of maples.
Flowers/Fruit Fruit heavy, dry, globose, 2.5 to 4 cm in diameter.
Climate/Habitat Native to temperate regions of eastern North America and cultivated in temperate zones worldwide. It grows from sea level up to 800 m in altitude, in forests, floodplains, swamps, and along rivers.
