Maritime Pine

Its trunk is usually somewhat twisted, dark brown in color due to its thick, deeply cracked bark. It has an irregular and open crown. Its fruits, the pine nuts, are 8 to 10 mm with a wing of 20 to 25 mm that disperses in the wind.

Curiosities

Pinus was the Latin name for pines, mainly assigned to the stone pine and its wood; pinaster is a Latin name assigned to a wild pine whose suffix (-aster) denotes imperfection.

The maritime pine is the main producer of resin for the manufacture of glues, although the Aleppo pine and the black pine have also been exploited to a lesser extent.

It lives for 200 to 300 years.

Flowers/Fruit It flowers in early spring. Its fruits are cones, large and symmetrical, formed by scales.
Climate/Habitat It is found preferentially in poor, sandy, and acidic soils, which is why it is frequent in coastal dune systems, though it is not exclusive to this environment and also appears in areas near the coast. It can also be found at 1,500 m of altitude.
