The Lungs of Cabárceno
“El Pulmón de Cabárceno” (The Lungs of Cabárceno) is a clear example of environmental recovery in an environment significantly modified by human activity. After centuries of mining extraction, the land in Cabárceno was largely devoid of significant plant life. However, in just one year (between 1989 and 1990), thanks to the planting of over 5,000 trees and shrubs of different species, it transformed from an iron extraction mine into a Nature Park. This represented a massive effort in environmental restoration and serves as a testament to successful ecological transformation.
Today, Cabárceno is not only a park where animals from five continents live in semi-freedom, but also a vast botanical garden that we now call “El Pulmón de Cabárceno”.
