Águila calva americana - cabecera

It is the emblematic bird of the United States, although it was on the brink of extinction in that country because, for many decades, Bald Eagles were hunted for sport. Another problem affecting them was the use of pesticides, such as DDT, which weakened their eggshells and limited their ability to reproduce. Fortunately, the restriction of said pesticide in 1972 led to the recovery of the population ever since.

They live near water, especially on coasts and lakes, where fishing is abundant, although they also hunt and eat small mammals. These powerful birds use their talons to fish, although many times they feed on carrion or by stealing prey from other animals.

It usually mates for life. Its nest is typically built in trees, often on cliffs in the west, or on the ground on northern islands. Generally, when nesting in a tree, they choose very tall trees, taller than the rest of the surrounding forest, up to 54 meters or more above ground level.
