Black Poplar

Deciduous tree, with a straight trunk of grayish bark, soon cracked longitudinally, forming blackish ribs between the cracks, to which the name alludes.

Curiosities

It is the fastest-growing tree species on the Iberian Peninsula. Populus, from its scientific name, means “people” or “populace” in Latin; it is known as the “tree of the people.”

Height Up to 30 meters.
Leaves heart-shaped, simple, deciduous, alternate, rhomboid, finely serrated at the margin, intense green on the upper side, and with a long petiole that appears flattened.
Flowers/Fruit They grow grouped in catkins that are hanging and elongated. The fruits are capsules that open upon ripening and release the seeds wrapped in a cottony tissue that aids in dispersion.
Climate/Habitat They are often found on riverbanks, waterlogged areas, and generally very humid terrains. They adapt to all types of soil, even tolerating some salinity.
