Deciduous tree with grayish-brown bark, corky bark that becomes scaly and fissured with age.
The canopy shape is rounded, with many branches extending in different directions. It provides dense, very pleasant shade for the rigors of summer.

This species can live for up to 150 years.
It tolerates urban pollution, similar to the box elder maple (arce negundo), and is easy to transplant even as a large specimen.
Its hardwood is highly valued by carpenters.
