Holm Oak

Tree of variable size, dense canopy, and thick, dark trunk. The holm oak is the most characteristic species of Mediterranean forests; it is indifferent to soil type and grows from sea level up to 1300-1400 m in altitude, although it exceptionally reaches 2000 m.

Curiosities

It possesses strong wood, used in construction and as good quality firewood. Due to its resistance to impacts and rot, it is used to make cowbell clappers or pieces that will be subjected to humidity.

Its bark has been used for tanning hides due to its richness in tannins.

Height Up to 25 meters.
Leaves Lance-shaped or elliptical, up to 9 cm long, with a toothed or entire margin and rarely prickly.
Flowers/Fruit Flowering occurs between the months of March to May. Its fruits are known as acorns.
Climate/Habitat It dominates in regions with a Mediterranean and dry climate.
